New Moon in Capricorn A Six-Month Journey of Intention, Structure and Purpose

The Capricorn new moon was at 28 degrees of Capricorn and brought with it the end of Capricorn Season; marking the transition from the disciplined, earth sign energy of the ‘sea-goat’ to new beginnings and intellectual pursuits in Aquarius. It’s a new moon to create new structures for the New Year, to recommit to our priorities and with Saturn, its ruler, at the end of Pisces, we are also wrapping up a major cycle, both personally and collectively.

The new moon in Capricorn marks an important moment of initiation. New moons always begin a cycle bringing the energy of renewal and the sign that they fall in acts as a lens for events and experiences to key areas of our lives for the four weeks ahead.  When a new moon occurs in Capricorn, the emphasis is on long-term vision, responsibility and the structures that support our goals. Capricorn is the sign of maturity and responsibility, hard work and achievement, lessons and accountability, structure and the rules that govern them.

This new moon also sets intentions that will continue to unfold over the next six months, reaching clarity and culmination around the full moon in Capricorn in July. What begins now is not about quick results, but about laying foundations that are steady, sustainable and aligned with integrity.

The new moon is not alone in Capricorn; the Sun and Moon are bookended by Mercury and Mars in Capricorn on one side and Venus and Pluto in Aquarius on the other. In opposition to this line up is Jupiter in Cancer creating tension with the new moon, evoking the Mars-Jupiter opposition that occurred on 11th January - doing/driving for success (ambition) versus being/feeling/nurturing (emotions). With the Sun conjunct Mars in Capricorn, there is a provocative energy with this new moon that will play out over the coming four weeks, until the new moon (and solar eclipse) on 17th February.

With the major planetary shifts unfolding early this year, this new moon acts as an anchor point. It invites us to ground ourselves before movement accelerates, to clarify our direction and to consciously choose what we are ready to commit to for the months ahead. This is not a moment of rush — it is a moment of quiet resolve.

Capricorn is the 10th sign of the Zodiac and the last Earth sign; ruled by Saturn. Capricorn symbolically represents the milestones and achievements that mark our time here on earth as well as the order we must follow. Like all signs of the Zodiac, there is a duality to Capricorn. For example, Capricorn represents the structures that build and support our lives or on the flip side…the structures that can oppress; the achievements we are working towards … or the anxiety that we have not obtained them. So, we can sometimes reach the Capricorn new moon (and subsequently the New Year) with mixed feelings.

However, this is a new moon to take account of our lives; what is working and what isn’t working how we would like it to. We are invited to use this energy to restructure and reorganise and to set new goals for the coming months.

Pisces is on the receiving end of the Capricorn New Moon because Saturn is in Pisces. More specifically, Saturn is at the end of Pisces alongside Neptune. The end of Pisces is like gateway between one life and the next, one breath and the next. It’s liminal and brings us to a personal and collective intersection.

There may be a sense of endings as Saturn and Neptune stand at the end of Pisces and the Zodiac. Endings always bring new beginnings. We can ask ourselves - how will we prepare ourselves and our earthly lives for these new beginnings?

As we close out Capricorn season this year, we are given a fresh lunar cycle – one where we are called to reform and restructure. The New Moon in Capricorn grounds us as we embark on a journey towards growth. It supports: creating foundations and structures where there once were none. Standing like a mountain in the middle of the ocean, it is a shelter.

This New Moon is concerned with where we lay our roots and set ourselves up, acting like a space of protection as we find our way. Here, we start to build toward something bigger than ourselves, so how will we work with this energy? This is a pathway built with long-term potential. Nothing is impossible when we have faith.
